THE MEDICARE PROGRAM
Many people 65 and over know Medicare as a type of health insurance for medically necessary procedures. It does not provide coverage for general dentistry procedures such as cleanings and fillings. However, if you have an infection or another condition that is impacting both your oral and physical health (including bone loss or pain while chewing), Medicare may cover a portion of your out-of-pocket costs. Dr. Gary Green at G. Gary Green, DMD, PA is one of only one percent of U.S. dentists who are certified to treat Medicare patients. In his Caldwell, NJ practice, he can conduct a thorough examination to determine whether your oral health needs require a medically necessary intervention.
If you have any dental concerns and want to find out if they are covered by your Medicare plan, we encourage you to schedule an appointment to go over these concerns.
Medically Necessary Dental Services
Leaving a condition untreated could impact your health and well-being. For this reason you may be eligible to have a portion of your costs covered by Medicare. Generally, only severe oral health conditions that
threaten your overall physical health are considered medically necessary procedures. Some of these conditions may include:
- Dental infection that is threatening your physical health and increasing your risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, pulmonary (lung) infection, or blood clots.
- Gastroesophageal reflux or other stomach issues that result from a poor diet due to an inability to chew or consume healthy foods
- Cysts or abscesses in the bone
- Difficulty chewing food due to pain and lack of teeth
In order to determine whether you qualify to have your dental services covered by Medicare, you must schedule a consultation in person. Dr. Green will perform an examination and evaluate your condition to help determine if it meets the medical necessary requirements.
If you have a condition that has been left untreated and you feel it is impacting your well being, you may be eligible to have a portion of your costs covered by Medicare.
Your Out-of-Pocket Costs
If Medicare determines that you have a condition requiring medical intervention, Medicare will not cover all of the necessary fees. Under specific conditions 30-50 percent could be paid. This could translate to having $10,000 of your treatment covered by Medicare, which means you will still be responsible for the remaining cost of treatment.
CareCredit is a third-party lending company we work with to help our patients cover the costs of these necessary dental procedures. In addition to Care Credit, we accept all major credit cards, cash, and checks.
