Metal-Free Practice
Angela - Actual Patient
Metals are being voluntarily phased out of dentistry, and in the future, they may be legislated out of dentistry as well. Cosmetically, they are an inferior material. Metal-colored restorations are unsightly, and over time, they tarnish and can even stain your teeth. This is enough reason for most people to choose tooth colored restorations, but it is not the most important reason. Heavy metals, in dentistry, can damage your teeth, your health, and the environment of your mouth.
Silver amalgam fillings consist of about 50% mercury. There are many problems with using mercury in dentistry. While the overall health problems and the dangers to the environment are still controversial in much of the medical community, the damage that they can cause to your teeth is unquestioned.
Mercury and dental damage
Mercury expands and contracts when exposed to hot and cold temperatures. That is why it is used in thermometers. Mercury in your mouth expands and contracts when you consume hot and cold foods and beverages. This leads to several tooth damaging situations:
Crack and fractures in the tooth
Gaps between the tooth and the restoration which allow food particles into the tooth and cause decay
Loose restorations which fail
Small imperceptible fractures in your teeth can go unnoticed for years while decay and damage is happening inside of your tooth.
Mercury and your health
It is undisputed that mercury vapors are released from silver amalgam fillings when they are placed, when they are removed, and when you chew. What is uncertain is how much and whether enough is absorbed by the body to cause serious damage to your health. Many experts believe it is, and we choose not to take the risk.
Mercury poisoning causes many serious health problems including:
Loose teeth
Gum problems
Arthritis
Tremors
Multiple sclerosis
Birth defects
Kidney damage
Mood swings
Hallucinations
Memory loss
Alzheimer’s disease
Mercury and the environment
A certain amount of waste is created by dental procedures. When heavy metals are used in dentistry they also become a part of this waste. Currently, lawmakers around the country are trying to phase out the use of heavy metals in dental restorations, not only because of the health risks to individual patients, but also due to the cumulative impact on the environment.
