Dental Bridge Questions Serving Caldwell, Essex County, Livingston, and Verona, New JerseyWhat is a dental bridge?A dental bridge replaces one or several teeth with artificial, porcelain teeth that are anchored in place by the surrounding healthy teeth. What is the difference between a bridge and a partial?A partial is removable, like dentures. A bridge is permanently fixed in place. Will a bridge interfere with my ability to chew or speak naturally? No. The artificial teeth are precisely crafted to match your natural teeth, and to match up perfectly with your opposing teeth. They will look, feel, and act like your natural teeth. Also, since a bridge is permanently fixed in place, it cannot slip or move around when your chew and speak, and there is no risk of getting food particles underneath it. Does a bridge look like false teeth? No. The artificial teeth will be color matched to your natural teeth, and crafted to the unique shape of your teeth. Also, they are made of porcelain so they will reflect light in the same way as natural tooth enamel, so they look real and alive. Will I have to change my diet if I get a bridge? No. Porcelain is strong and durable, so you can chew the same foods you are already used to eating. It is also very resistant to staining. Why should I choose a bridge instead of dental implants?Dental implants are preferable if you are a good candidate. However, you must have adequate bone tissue for implants, and they are not appropriate for smokers because of the elevated risk of rejection. Bridges are less invasive and do not require surgery. They are appropriate for most people who cannot have implants, or who do not wish to have implant surgery, but who do want a fixed replacement for missing teeth.
