Candidacy for Dental Implants

If you are missing one or several teeth and you want the most durable, long-lasting, natural-looking, hassle-free replacement available, then odds are good that you are a prime candidate for dental implants. The advantages of implants are many; not only are they easier to maintain than bridges or dentures, but they also prevent further deterioration of bone and gum tissue. We highly recommend that our patients choose implants if their current oral health allows.

People lose their teeth for any number of reasons, but it is usually the result of disease, injury, or poor dental hygiene. The earlier you treat a missing tooth, the better your chances of avoiding further dental problems, and the more likely your implant will be a success.

You are a good candidate if:

• You have otherwise good oral health
• Your jawbone structure is sufficient to hold the implant
• You are a non-smoker - smoking significantly increases the likelihood of implant rejection and slows the osseointegration process
• Your general health is good. You will discuss any chronic health issues with Dr. Green at your implant dentistry consultation

Most patients we see that are interested in implants are good candidates. Some are concerned that age might be a factor, but this is not usually the case. We have done many successful implants on elderly patients.

Even if you fit the above requirements, a thorough examination including x-rays will ultimately be necessary to determine if implants are right for you. If it is determined that you are not a good candidate, then there are other options available to you such as dentures or partials or dental bridges. After your examination, Dr. Green will be able to recommend the best treatment plan for your individual case.
