Candidacy for Invisalign™

The Invisalign™ system provides many advantages over traditional braces for teens and adults who wish to straighten their teeth. If you are a candidate for Invisalign, then you can look forward to straight teeth without the aesthetic drawbacks, mess, and high-maintenance involved with braces and traditional orthodontics. Instead of having brackets glued to your teeth, you will wear a series of clear aligning mouth guards. And, as the name suggests, others will not even notice.

Ideal Invisalign candidates have:

• Fully grown jaw and facial structures
• Slight to moderate gaps between teeth
• Slight to moderate crowding or overlapping of teeth
• A properly aligned bite

Many of our Invisalign patients have had traditional braces in the past, but for one reason or another their teeth have shifted out of alignment. In fact, it is very common for teeth to shift slightly as years pass, even after proper retainer use. Wisdom teeth often cause this shifting. In many cases, this shifting is relatively minor, making Invisalign the ideal option for restoring a perfect, straight smile.

Keep in mind that Invisalign is not for everyone. Those who have more significant crowding or gaps will probably require other straightening options. It may be necessary to wear traditional braces for a while to correct more severe problems, and then switch over to Invisalign for the final touches. If you have missing teeth, or severely damaged teeth, you will most likely require other cosmetic dentistry treatments prior to Invisalign.

This system has its limitations. However, many cosmetic dentists attempt to do too much with Invisalign, producing less-than-desirable results and excessive costs to their patients. It takes an experienced cosmetic dentist to know what these limitations are and how they apply to you.
